Online life quotes are fast, free, and the best way to start your life insurance purchase. You can get one by clicking the orange button right now, if you want! But we want you to wait just a sec. Before you start getting your own online life quotes, we're going to explain which pieces of information our quoter needs and why, so you'll understand exactly how your entries affect the rate you're quoted.

Let's start with the basics. Here's what you'll see when you begin an online life insurance quote. It's a simple form, asking you to fill in a few blanks. Don't worry...we'll explain what each blank is asking for and tell you why it's necessary.

Coverage Amount

This is the first blank you'll have to fill in during the online quoting process. Unfortunately, there's no right amount of life insurance that works for everyone. We recommend you select coverage that's at least 8-15 times your annual income. Our quoter gives you a calculator so you don't have to do the math. Just select your annual income from the dropdown menu, select your multiplier (8, 10, 12, 15, 20), and click "Calculate Coverage." Boom. You've got a basic coverage amount to start with...and no one had to do any math.

Term or Whole Life

Here, you face a choice: do you want a quote for term or permanent life insurance? Term life insurance covers you for periods of 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. It's a very affordable option, but you're taking a bit of a gamble. If you outlive your term, the insurance company doesn't pay anything. If you don't, they pay your family the face value of your policy.

Some people don't like the idea of paying into a policy for, say, 20 years and then getting nothing in return. This isn't a very good way to look at it. Your family has been protected against financial disaster for all these years, so that's a great thing! But if you still don't like the idea of paying for peace of mind, you can select 20-Year-Return-of-Premium or 30-Year-Return-of-Premium, which means that at the end of your term, if you're still alive, the insurance company will refund all of your premium payments. An online life quote for a return-of-premium policy is going to cost you more, so just be aware. You might want to run one quote each way: one with return-of-premium and one without.

If you don't like the idea of limiting your policy to a particular term, you might want to select "Lifetime" in our quoter. These whole life insurance policies are more expensive, but you know they're going to pay out eventually.

Applicant Information

Next, our quoter will as you to fill in a few pieces of information about yourself. We're not nosy—we don't think you look a day over 25! But we do need to know your age because insurance companies charge based on age groups. The younger you are, the more affordable your policy will be. Insurers assume you have a long life to live, and they won't have to pay out on your behalf any time soon. That's also why they want to know your gender, height/weight, health class, and tobacco use. Statistically, women live longer than men and tend to pay a bit less for life insurance. Non-smokers have much less chance of being diagnosed with certain kinds of cancer, so they'll almost always pay less than smokers. Because insurers will always ask for this information before they'll give us a rate for you, we need it in order to process each and every online life quote.

This is is all you need to get a fast, free quote. If you like what you see and decide to apply for a policy, keep in mind that you'll have to provide more information during the application process, including your health and financial history. Insurers take all these things into account when assigning you a rate.
